Meh. [Dec. 17th, 2009|12:07 am]
[Current Mood | happy]

Being told to "be more self-confident" isn't really helpful. It's not like a light bulb is going to go off over my head and I'm going to suddenly say, "Gee, you're right! I do need to be more self-confident!" and then proceed to remain self-confident for the rest of my life (however long that may be).

Regardless of that matter, I've been having a great past couple of months. Got a co-first author paper published in Mol Cell Bio, my committee told me to start writing my thesis and are planning to graduate me in August, and I have even actually received an letter from a school inviting to apply for post doc positions in their department.

^_^

(I haven't even decided if I'll do a postdoc yet. What other career options are available to someone with a Ph.D. in biomedical sciences (with an emphasis in molecular biology)? I still fantasize about applying to the FBI.)

Halloween! [Nov. 1st, 2009|11:44 pm]
Halloween is still one of my favorite holidays. (If only all parties could be costume parties!!) I had planned on making soul cakes as a traditional All Hallow's Eve/All Soul's Day treat, but this idea was negated the instant I accidentally slammed my front door on the tip of my right index finger early Saturday afternoon. It's healed enough that it only feels uncomfortable when I type, and not *OMG*PAIN*PAIN*PAIN* like it was the rest of the day Saturday. My fingertip is dark red/purple, not a good sign. :p

My coworker is big on anime and cosplay as well, and she asked me to make her a Nyota Uhura dress for her to wear, while she and her husband worked on putting Spock's outfit together for him. Read more... )

We watched "Planet Terror" (easily one of my favorite zombie movies!) and "The Evil Dead" at the Halloween party. Girl with gun leg ftw! As for Bruce Campbell... it was kind of a boring movie. I probably just I need to see Evil Dead 3.

nom nom sushi [Oct. 28th, 2009|11:11 am]
The "Crunch" roll at Sake Cafe is really, really good. Sake Cafe moved into the old On The Border building and although they attempted to "Asianify" it, the building still looks reminiscent of Mexican architecture.

Also, I suck at making dipping sauce for yakitori. I think I fail at cooking Japanese food in general. Good thing I'm not Japanese.

WTF, Facebook? [Oct. 26th, 2009|12:13 am]
[Current Mood | blah]
[Current Music |Labuat - Soy Tu Aire]

Apparently, Facebook has this new thing where it suggests activities for you. It used to only message you friend suggestions based on people who have a lot of friends in common with you. But now, it seems to be keeping track of friends that you haven't messaged in a while and suggests you get back in contact.

So just now, it suggested that I reconnect with a friend of mine from middle school, Kendra. We used to sit next to each other in math class and she'd found me on Facebook a while back.

For some reason, I decided to click on her name and post a, "Hey, how've you been?" message on her wall and ask her about her future science career plans.

Instead, I see posts of "We'll Miss You" and that someone had posted her obituary... which is dated back in May.

. . .

WTF.

. . .

RIP, Kendra. :(

((I wonder Facebook will implement something that notifies you when one of your Facebook friends passes away. Or maybe I'm just a really bad Facebook stalker.))

rawr dragonflies [Sep. 24th, 2009|11:56 am]
[Current Music |劉德華 (Andy Lau) - Everyone Is No.1]

I opened an account on Etsy over a year ago with the intentions of listing my dragonflies for sale. Over a year later, I finally got up off my ass and did it.

I am considering donating all proceeds from the selling of pink ones to breast cancer research (though I am still peeved at how CSCRB royally screwed us musicians over, so it probably won't be for TNBC research).

Anyhow, C&C plz!

Football again. [Sep. 8th, 2009|09:25 pm]
So UW didn't suck against LSU as much as was anticipated! Hooray! When they scored the first touchdown of the whole game, I did a little dance in my friend's living room. UF has brainwashed me, I never cared about football until I came here. Then again, I wouldn't turn on the TV to the game myself if I were at home alone-- I'd be content with looking up the score online the next day. I suppose that make me somewhat of a "tagalong" (or whatever a more appropriate term would be).

Here's hoping! [Sep. 4th, 2009|10:36 am]
Dear football gods:

Please make LSU lose and UW win tomorrow. I will be very happy. Think of Dubs-- you don't want him to be disappointed on the day of his debut, do you? He knows which school truly deserves the purple and the gold.

Sincerely,
